While everyone is watching soccer and talking about Europe, I extended my horizon. This afternoon I saw Tanzanian band Jagwa Music playing an open air gig at Kreuzbergs community garden project Prinzessinnengarten.

Straight from Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), a crew of 8 youngsters playing intricate grooves at breakneck speed on traditional & makeshift percussion, a keyboard player going wild on a battered vintage Casio, and three relentless front persons: two breathtaking, spectacular dancers & a charismatic lead vocalist/MC, belting out songs about survival in the urban maze, unfaithful lovers & voodoo.

Like labelmates Konono No.1, they produce their sounds through a shitty soundsystem to get an trademark style. Very energetic music and unknown to my ears till today. Catch them again tomorrow at Monarch with a DJ set by Awesome Tapes From Africa.

Say something.
